Adding Living Space to your Home

Add an extra living room to your home by simply by Sprucing up the Outdoors!

For those of us living urban lifestyles, enough suitable space in the home can be a challenge and for families, additional living areas suitable as time-out, peaceful zones are often hard to come by. For this reason, many homes these days are designed with an extra lounge to accommodate separate age groups and activities.

However, not all homeowners enjoy this luxury, and for larger families especially with teenagers, sometimes even two lounge spaces is not enough! So Kiwi's in our typical 'number eight wire' mentality of thinking outside the square, are turning to their homes exterior and the outdoors and re-inventing these areas as spaces to relax and lounge in or entertain.

Planning

Where you locate your outdoor living room depends on how you’re going to use it and the size of your garden. If space is tight or it’s for a dining zone, position it near the house, within reach of the kitchen or barbecue. In a larger backyard, distance from the house can give a lounging spot destination status and a sense of seclusion. An area with natural shelter, from a mature tree or near a tall fence or wall, is ideal.

Flooring

Selecting flooring is easy depending upon the environment you live in and weather patterns, your personal taste, and how robust you want your flooring to be. Most often tiles are chosen because they are low in maintenance requirements and there are so many options to chose from by way of colour, finish, and size.

Tiles have also become more sophisticated in their qualities suitable for outdoors, both for flooring and for walls. Textured 3D tiles, rustic coloured backdrops, or those in a large format are becoming increasingly popular in NZ as magnificent backdrops to the patio, deck, and BBQ spaces.

Furniture

Choose outdoor-grade furniture in materials like hardwood, steel or cast iron that is heavy enough not to be blown about when it’s windy. A permanent structure such as a built-in daybed is a good choice, as is built-in seating constructed around a stone table or a fire pit; as an added bonus, a firepit makes a wonderful focal point for gatherings in the colder months.

Decorating

With the myriad of homeware stores available in NZ and big-box retailers also stocking affordable products to accessorise, improving our outdoors is not the challenge it once was. Undertake research into on-trend colourways, mix in your personal tastes and have fun sourcing cushions, throw rugs, sheepskins and cozy add-on's to create a warm and inviting space.
